Hyde Park Women Vow to Stay Fit

The woman exercising in the pool is 84-year old Alma Stanko. Working with her in the water is Jen Sirotak, physical therapist and clinic manager of the Oxford Physical Therapy Centers located in the same building as Gold's Gym. And observing Alma along side the pool are Shirley Schmelzle, Alma's daughter, and Maggie Schmelzle, Alma's granddaughter. These three generations of women ranging in age from 84 to 18, all believe in the results of fitness training, all are now members of Gold's Gym, and all have benefited in their own physical ways from Jen's help and expertise. It's no wonder they're all smiling.

Alma says, "I never learned to swim. I hated and feared water as a result. When my back surgeon recommended aquatic therapy as part of my recovery program last year, I simply put it off for that reason." Alma did some land-based physical therapy and found limited relief. But it was the second series of therapy, however, that landed her in Jen's lap. Jen immediately knew that 'getting Alma in the water' was the right approach to getting her more physically active and reducing her pain and discomfort, without increasing the stress on her body. But "convincing Alma was no easy matter," reports Jen. Alma finally agreed to don her bathing suit and try it, and aquatic therapy was an immediate success. "The water makes me feel wonderful, especially my legs. I'd recommend it to anyone."

Jen worked with Alma at the Oxford Physical Therapy Centers in Hyde Park throughout her physical therapy program and even took her professional services on the road. She visited Alma at home; Alma lives with Shirley and her husband Ed, and two grand children, Maggie and Brian. Jen learned that the Schmelzles had a back yard pool that Alma could be using but never did because of her fear of water. Jen again worked her convincing ways and got Alma to 'try it, just once...' Now Alma can be found doing the exercises Jen gave her - spending about an hour every day in the water - weather permitting. Shirley is thrilled with her mother's progress. "My Mom has more energy, is eating healthier and smarter, and has lost weight and inches as a result. She's now wearing clothes two sizes smaller than before she started in the water. It wouldn't have happened without Jen. It's just great." Alma is now set to go back to Gold's when the outdoor home pool closes for the season. "I got my own membership, and I intend to use it," she says quite emphatically.

Shirley was actually the first of the family to become a patient at Oxford Physical Therapy Centers. Last November, she was diagnosed with a herniated disk. "I had tremendous back and leg pain when I contacted the Center. The program they gave me was a lot about 'strengthening the core'. I worked with various equipment in the Center, and then did some cross training with the equipment at Gold's. There was a lot of abdominal strengthening, which I learned would be key to maintaining freedom from back and leg discomfort." Shirley already had a membership to Gold's as part of a family enrollment, but never used it before the therapy with Oxford Physical Therapy Centers. "I guess I'm like my mother in some ways...putting something off that I wasn't comfortable with." Now, Shirley can be found active at the gym, and active in her yardscaping, "a real physical work-out," she says.

While Shirley was mid-way through her treatments at Oxford Physical Therapy Centers, daughter Maggie suffered a volleyball injury in January and was given a recovery program that also included physical therapy. Shirley knew just where to send her. "I trusted them implicitly." Maggie learned a lot from being a patient there. She was no stranger to strength training and working out, but Jen taught her more about the mechanical elements of the body that needed attention if she was to regain her strength and maintain it long term.

It was ironically mid term during Maggie's program when Shirley suggested that Alma do her physical therapy at the convenient-to-home Oxford Physical Therapy Centers. "I forewarned Jen about Alma...she has her own opinion about things and is not afraid to share it!"

"It was really funny sometimes," says Maggie. All three of us would be at Oxford Physical Therapy Centers on the same day, sometimes with overlapping appointment times. The other patients couldn't believe the three generations of us! I think it must have been a first. But whatever the case, we all benefited, and are now more conscious about how we spend our time and treat our bodies. We really appreciate all that Oxford Physical Therapy did for us, and do stop in now and again and say 'hi' on our way to Gold's."

Maggie is heading to the University of Maryland this fall on a volleyball scholarship. Alma can be found shopping at Kroger's and Macy's without the cane she used to carry with her. And Shirley has happily returned to her flourishing garden, golf game, and generally over-active lifestyle. All still make time for the fitness training they know will keep them able to do these things.

OXFORD PHYSICAL THERAPY'S AQUATIC PHYSICAL THERAPY PROGRAM CONTINUES TO GROW.

Oxford Physical Therapy's advancement in the Aquatic Physical Therapy concept for patient treatment care has been a huge success. Located On-site at the Tri-County/Fairfield Center, and Hyde Park/Norwood Center, and in conjunction with the Miami University Recreational Center in Oxford, Oxford Physical Therapy has progressed the same form of the highest quality of physical therapy care in an aquatic setting.

The question is; "What is Aquatic Physical Therapy?" The answer is simple. We continue to provide the absolute best in physical therapy care available, and now we can use water as the medium of choice for patients. The effects of buoyancy on the body will "unload" the body of its perception of weight in space. Your body feels only a fraction of your weight, which will translate into an increased activity level due to the decreased stress to the body part that needs treatment.

Our patients love the soothing warmth of the water and are able to increase their activity level due to the decreased weight on the affected limb or back with buoyancy.
